Leonard Hoeft is awarded the Otto Hahn Medal for the year 2020 by the Max Planck Society

Every year, the Max Planck Society awards a selection of junior scientists the Otto Hahn Medal for their outstanding scientific achievements.

Is the law only as effective as the threat with sanctions is credible? Legal philosopher H.L.A. Hart objected: most of the law’s subjects are goodnatured, but one has to explain them what they are supposed to do. In an elegant experiment, Leonhard Hoeft supports the claim. Yet there is a downside: the law’s subjects refrain from themselves understanding the normative problem. They are happy to oblige, but remain unenlightened.
