Personalized AI-based Interventions Against Online Norm Violations: Behavioral Effects and Ethical Implications

The newly founded Institute for Ethics in Artificial Intelligence at the Technical University Munich awarded Anna Baumert a 3-year grant for the interdisciplinary project "Personalized AI-based Interventions Against Online Norm Violations: Behavioral Effects and Ethical Implications“. Julia Sasse from the MPI will serve as a Co-PI on the project. In collaboration with Jens Grossklags, professor for cyber trust at TUM, Anna and Julia will head a team of psychologists and computer scientists that investigates effects of AI-based interventions as compared to human intervention, the ethical implications of personalising AI-based interventions, and their technical implementation.

Principle Investigators:

  • Prof. Dr. Anna Baumert, TUM School of Education, TUM and Max Planck Institute for Research on Collective Goods, Bonn
  • Prof. Jens Grossklags, Department of Informatics, TUM and Chair of Cyber Trust

Researchers: Dr. Julia Sasse, Senior Research Fellow, Max-Planck-Institute for Research on Collective Goods; Felix Fischer, Department of Informatics, TUM; Severin Engelmann, Department of Informatics, TUM

Undesirable online behaviors, such as disseminating fake news or cyber-bullying, can affect public discourse and cause substantial personal harm or harm to democratic processes. Despite progress in artificial intelligence (AI) to address these issues, purely technical solutions are still out of reach. This project combines expertise from psychology, ethics and informatics to conduct multi-disciplinary research on the psychological potential and ethical and technical prerequisites of personalized AI-based interventions targeting perpetrators of undesirable online behaviors. We use extensive experimentation online and in the lab, coupled with the theoretical development of a robust ethical framework.
